In preparation for resuming writing full time about Broadband Wireless Internet Access (BWIA), I'm "clearing the decks" in my blogging system (Typepad) of the old "didn't quite launch" blogs such as BWIA Backhaul that are now just a productivity sink to work around.

Background:
In my writing (circa 1997 - 2010 or so) I painted with a very big brush in covering what I considered to be BWIA, from Wi-Fi Hotspots, to Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPS) to wireless telephony carriers (cellcos), and sometimes satellite. I've even written stories about fiber and copper networks when there was a tie-in with BWIA.

But, often I heard from readers who said "Why are you writing about X - that's not the stuff I want to read about - why don't you write more of the stuff I want to read about?". 

What I took from that feedback is that (at least then) BWIA wasn't enough of a niche... I needed to further "nich-ify" my writing. The WISPs didn't want to read about satellite. The cellcos didn't want to read about WISPs.

That was the theory, anyway. I decided I would self-federate a family of blogs and spend a few hours each month creating content for each of them, and schedule the posts out for one or two per week. That didn't quite work out :-)

So now I'm porting the small amounts of content from those "nichey" blogs into BWIA News, deleting those old blogs. BWIA News is my primary blog.

Office Progress

Apologies to readers who were expecting some BWIA content. Not quite yet, as you might care to read below. I'm in the process of getting my office back together and it'll be a bit before I'm back up and running, writing about license-exempt Broadband Wireless Internet Access. But... soon! Promise!

Definite progress on the office this weekend!

My desk is now moved into the new office, but not permanently installed. It's an Ikea EFECTIV (sp?) (discontinued) based around a curved corner unit with extension tables to the right and/or left, grafted on with a combination of special legs and clamps. It's great, except that it's fragile if you try to move it. So I'm waiting until the work on the wall shelving is done before bolting the desk together.

We had seen a hanging / bracket wall shelf system at one of the local Storables stores and liked it. But I read a good post on Lifehacker about a similar system (Elfa) at The Containter Store and mentioned that the selection of accessories was fantastic, and after a visit to see the system I agree. The Storables system is much more customer-friendly - it's accessible in the store with all the component parts right there for grab and go shopping, they have an easy-to-follow catalog with the various items, and they also have a true "maple" finish for the shelves and that would have matched the desk much better.

But, again, the selection of accessories, especially "small stuff" like "backstops" for using the shelving as bookshelves, is much better with the Elfa products, so no regrets on having chosen to go that route. Having settled the question of which system to use... now the chore of laying out the new office to accommodate the shelving. It should be pretty simple.

We bought some sample pieces of the Elfa rail, standards, and brackets to "test fit" in the various places in the office, so I'll figure out what the shopping list will be for the next shopping foray. Once all the pieces I decide I need is in hand to do the wall drilling all at once, I plan to rent one of those sexy rotating laser levels to "shoot" a line around the room so all the shelves will end up at a uniform height even on different walls. I figured out last night that this would be really critical for a new idea I had of building some custom triangular shelves for the corner above the desk. I've long wanted to mount the secondary monitor for the iMac above the iMac, but short of hacking together some ugly plywood contraption, there was no good way to do it. With the new shelving system and a little bit of work figuring out and building the corner shelves I need, it will end up looking very nice.I'll even have more and better storage in the otherwise unused space above this corner. In theory, anyway.

The Container Store will get even more of my money from being the only place that I can get a low-profile (27 inches tall) legal two drawer file cabinet... @ $299 each! These file cabinets have a modular base, so you can put on low profile rollers (adds only about 1/2 inch to overall height), or a base that builds it up to the apparently standard 29 inches - mix and match, and each type of base is extra, of course. Buying those file cabinets will be a bit expensive, but using them means I can put them under the desk without having to "hack" the legs (and affecting the stability) to increase the height 2 inches needed to make room for stanndard-height file cabinet. Having the file cabinets close means I'll use them a lot more (a tip from Getting Things Done) and overall the desk will be more stable, enjoyable, and productive.

One of the many small things that swung me over to the Elfa shelving was that they offered shelves in varying depths. (Storables offered just 14 inch deep shelves, but you could order custom lengths! They would have made a lot money from me from that.) The shorter depth shelves will be much more ideal for the "radio corner" where I'll be stacking up the various data radios, TNCs, and other gadgetry associated with my packet radio systems. It will be a kind of "non-rack" rack and in my mind, it already looks very cool.

I'm typing this on a temporary computer setup. The iMac is still sitting in the corner - it's just too big and fragile to put on the desk given the prospect of shuffling the desk to do the work on the shelving. I'll wait to bring it back to life until after I have the shelving "mostly" settled and the desk installed. The iMac needs some surgery - add 1 more GB of RAM to bring it up to the max. of 3 GB in preparation for a clean install of Snow Leopard and all that entails... but that's a whole 'nuther project.

But this setup isn't bad - the MacBook Pro is good enough for now (forgot that it was a bit hard to read on the TypePad edit screen when it's not right up next to you). I'm on Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi, and that speeds things up in small and perceptible ways. I'm also using the IBM PS/2 keyboard, and it's so much fun to use those big, clicky keys. But man, do I miss the Apple keyboard shortcuts (this keyboard is pre "Windows" key, so there's no easy way to map an Apple CMD key. There's probably a way, but that can wait until I have the iMac back in use. If I was using a PC, all of the keyboard shortcuts use the CTRL key... which the PS/2 keyboard has, of course. More about clicky keyboards for Macs in a subsequent post.

It gets a little chilly in here, so I'm running the little electric heater and that makes it cozy in a hurry. One of the things I insisted on for the new offices is a dedicated 20A circuit for powering the electronics and things like the heaters. TIna would routinely pop the circuit breaker when she had her heater on and used her (little!) laser printer. I discovered that the 15A circuit in her office was shared by three of the four bedrooms on the main floor... so that 20A dedicated circuit in each office was badly needed!

Sorry no pictures yet - it was yet another busy weekend - worked at the day job on Saturday and Sunday was mostly consumed with family stuff except for the visit to the Container Store. I'm definitely enjoying the new office - it already feels much better than the old office.

In My New Office

I'll post a picture tomorrow, but as of today, I'm in my newly-remodeled office and wanted a post to commemorate this big step.

Close enough to official - some networking installed, plenty of electrical power, nicely painted walls, new laminate floor.

Furniture, furnishings, computers start moving in over the next couple of days. The radios will take a little longer.

Update3 - Twittering, Kindle-ing, Advertisements, BWIA Magazine, Splinter Blog Consolidation

I've been making some incremental moves to restart writing about Broadband Wireless Internet Access / WiMAX and I've made some... encouraging enough... progress that a(n) brief update is appropriate.

Tweeting - "@bwianews"
Twitter has grown on me, both as a "follower" and a "tweeter". My original take on Twitter and tweeting was that it's just another way to stay connected with your circle of friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and influencers, on a par with IM, blogs, mailing lists, email, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. Twitter just another communications tool. To those that despise Twitter as a silly waste of time just to be able to know what a celebrity had for lunch... yeah, it can be merely that if that's the content you choose to subscribe to. But Twitter is entirely, individually customized, so you can make it into an effective tool by being highly selective about who you "follow". And periodically pruning what/who you "follow".

One of the things that has really grown on me about Twitter is the 140 character limit of each tweet. It's a (fun) challenge to condense content you want to share into 140 characters, but that 140 character limit of each tweet is a joy to read and scan. If it's important for it to be said, you can say it in 140 characters. But better than the challenge of composing content in 140 characters is reading content in 140 character chunks, and that's what ultimately swung me over to considering Twitter as an effective communications tool.

Another effective way to use Twitter is to establish multiple Twitter accounts for your various interests. What makes this an effective strategy is that better Twitter clients allow you to monitor more than one Twitter accounts. Thus, I created Twitter ID bwianews and moved all the Twitter users that I follow because of some relation to Broadband Wireless Internet Access and WiMAX to that account. More importantly, I will use "@bwianews" to Twitter "microblog posts" (that phrase will take some time to get used to) about BWIA / WiMAX that I consider significant, including (relatively rare) "re-Tweets". A number of colleagues from when I wrote a lot about BWIA / WiMAX had found me on Twitter, but probably aren't that interested in my impressions of life and general, and with creating "@bwianews", they don't have to.

This may well be controversial, but I'm seriously considering the possibility of offering sponsorships for "@bwianews". That is, in return for a sponsorship fee, I'll post several Tweets per day on behalf of the sponsor. Don't like the idea of ads? Don't follow @bwianews - Twitter is 100% opt-in.

Broadband Wireless Internet Access / WiMAX Blog on Amazon Kindle
The Kindle, and now the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX are impressive little devices, and I'm sure that I'll have one within a year. A logical, but savvy, nonetheless, move on Amazon's part to broaden the overall appeal of the Kindle(s) was to offer subscriptions to magazines in addition to ebooks. But it caught nearly everyone by surprise that Amazon also began to offer "subscriptions" to individual blogs. Not just "megablogs" like, say, Boing Boing and Slashdot, but individual blogs written by... individuals, like Tom Evslin's excellent blog Fractals of Change. $0.99 or $1.99 / month gets a Kindle reader a once-per-day delivery of postings from an individual blog, reformatted (from the basic text of the blog's RSS feed) for comfortable viewing on the Kindle.

For individual blog publishers like Tom and I, it's found money, so I signed up. It's pretty painless. BWIA News isn't quite ready for Kindle as I haven't uploaded two required graphics, but I'll do so soon. BWIA News is now ready for Kindle subscriptions.

One change that posting with Kindle in mind that I'll explain up front* is that I'll now be publishing full article text in the RSS feed. To publish blogs on the Kindle, Amazon's servers simply subscribe to a blog's RSS feed, reformat it, and distribute it to Kindle subscribers. So if your blog's feed is set up to publish an excerpt, rather than the full text of the post, in the RSS feed, paying Kindle readers won't get to see the full text of your blog's articles.

* (Mostly for my good friend Bill V. who, without this explanation, would soon let me know that he's glad to see content on this blog again... but he strongly prefers to see an excerpt rather than full article text in the RSS feed.)

Giving Up On AdSense, Will Consider Individual Advertisements
Google AdWords / AdSense was nice, in its time, and I made a little bit of money from it for a while, but it's no longer generating enough income to make it worth the screen real estate that was devoted to it, so I've stopped displaying AdSense ads.

It was past time to do that. Google keeps foisting more and more administrative overhead onto casual AdSense publishers like me... pfah! But mostly Google never addressed or even acknowledged my major issue with AdSense -  that I couldn't specify the advertisers that I wanted to specifically display. Instead of readers seeing a relevant AdWords ad for, say, Redline Communications WiMAX, they would see four ads for cut-rate cellular voice resellers. That's nice... but hardly interesting (let alone worth clicking-through) to the typical reader of BWIA / WiMAX News. While AdSense enabled me to prohibit specific ads from being displayed (by URL), I couldn't keep adding to the exclusion list indefinitely. I tried - but there were always more marginal ads in the queue as fast as I excluded the worst offenders. What AdSense really needs, in my opinion, is an opt-in option; then it would be a lot more useful. And yes, I'm sure Google's engineers are smart enough to work out some protection for the scammers / spammers that would feature only high-revenue clickthroughs for real estate, investment, jewelry, etc.and then "click-farm" the resulting ads.

Another interesting factor is that I've been periodically contacted about advertising, even though the content has grown somewhat static. Apparently advertising on blogs is becoming more mainstream. So, instead of AdSense ads, I'm willing to consider individual ads, either banner ads or small "AdWords-like" size and location (such as the current location in the upper-right corner of the blog). BWIA Magazine will encompass cellular broadband technology (HSxPA, 1xEV-DO, LTE, etc.) used to deliver Broadband Internet Access, Broadband Internet Access via satellite, WiMAX technology (Mobile and fixed), Wi-Fi, Municipal Wi-Fi, microwave point-to-point networks, proprietary systems, and many other technologies.

BWIA Magazine will initially publish on a bimonthly schedule. BWIA Magazine will utilize a hybrid print/online publishing model through the use of print-on-demand services such as MagCloud. BWIA Magazine will be available at no cost online; print subscriptions (and individual issues) will be available upon payment of a subscription or individual issue fee. BWIA Magazine will include advertisements, and we feel that this will be a strong draw for readers. Just as there is a dearth of quality content on the subject of BWIA, there's no one good place to find out who the vendors of BWIA-related products are.

Consolidating Down To Just A Few BWIA-related Blogs
I tried an interesting experiment - "self-franchising" a number of narrowly-focused blogs - Independent Clearwire Blog is one example. While I think the idea could have worked, I ran out of time and funding to be able to devote enough time to generate content for all of them. In the coming months, I'll be consolidating all the content from those "splinter" blogs to this one, and then redirect the domain names to the relevant Category. 

Wrapping Up
So the upshot of all of this is that, with the option of "micro-blogging" via Twitter, some possibility of at least modest revenue via multiple streams, and really interesting things continuing to happen in the Broadband Wireless Internet Access / WiMAX industry...

Yes, I'll be gradually resuming writing about BWIA / WiMAX.

Writing about BWIA will remain a part-time endeavor for me for the foreseeable future. Between health, job, and home life, things have stabilized enough for me to resume writing about BWIA.

Thursday's Thoughts - Updates, Shameless Commerce

Ripoff First - if you're reading these words on a site or a feed other than www.bwianews.com, with my smiling visage in the upper left corner, the content you're reading is basically being ripped off from the original authors. Like every other web author, I have searches running for various keywords, etc. relevant to me, and I've seen my writing show up regularly on other sites, apparently from robotic harvesters. It probably isn't worth the effort to go after them, but such sites aren't anything I'd bother to read since there's no original content and apparently no human judgement being applied to what's posted. But then, I'm not the target customer for such sites, which seem largely to exist solely to collect clicks on Google AdSense ads.

Site Update For me, Thursdays usually aren't much for news, so that seems a good day to occasionally post such some info about site updates - Thursday's Thoughts. The vast majority of the time, BWIA / WiMAX News will be just that - news and insights on Broadband Wireless Internet Access / WiMAX.

Consolidating My BWIA Content I'm in the process of shutting down my various other BWIA-related sites, moving the content here to BWIA / WiMAX News, and then redirecting the domain names. Unmaintained blogs and sites are just too sad - for readers and for the authors. I think the idea of a "self-franchised" portfolio of blogs and sites was fundamentally sound. I believe I that I finally got the model worked out, and once I had that, I believe it could have worked if I'd had more time and money to execute... but I ran out of both. I'll be writing up what I learned and planned to do, some of it for public consumption at www.ordinaryblogging.com. The detailed business model may end up as a small, self-published book.

... Starting with Independent Clearwire Blog I'll talk more about this when I do a proper migration (learned a few things...), but the content from  Independent Clearwire Blog has already  been migrated here as a test.

Shameless Commerce (yeah, I'm a fan) I'll also do a more proper, formal job of this next item in the future, but I figured I'd get the ball rolling. You'll see mention of this weekly. Gotta pay the bills, especially in this era. As you can see, AdSense, for me, has degenerated into the lowest common denominator for "wireless", and thus the ads, for readers of BWIA / WiMAX News are practically useless. I have (frustratingly!) almost no control over what ads appear here - I can "veto" certain ads that are particularly galling, but that quickly becomes a fool's errand. It would be ideal if I could specifically permit ads from certain companies, but that doesn't seem to be an option for Adsense. So...

No Article Today; RIP WaMu

Apologies for the lack of an article today. Life was a bit too demanding this morning and I wasn't able to complete Living With The iPhone 3G, Part 3, so it that will appear on Monday.

Here in the Seattle area, we're all in a bit of a state of shock that WaMu, after being such a financial powerhouse in the past decade or so, is no more. Seattle enjoyed the minor prominence of being the headquarters city to such a powerful consumer brand and being part of the top tier of consumer financial services. But we've survived the departure of Boeing's headquarters, the Sonics, Safeco, and many others. We'll be OK.

73, and Thanks For All The Fish

I wanted to take a moment to say 73 to the readers of BWIA News. (73 is Amateur Radio slang for "ending conversation, for now".)

I've tried to make a go of being a knowledgeable, independent writer on the subject of Broadband Wireless Internet Access. I am blessed beyond imagining that my wonderful wife Tina supported me... in every way... in trying to do this full time for the past eight years. I'm not terribly sad... at least Tina made it possible for me to try... and that's more support than most people ever get in pursuit of their dreams.

Writing about BWIA these last ten years has been a lot of fun; I've grown enormously as a person and as a writer, and its helped me and strengthened me in ways I never would have imagined, such as developing writing skills and knowledge of blogging / publishing that may be marketable. I might have even done some good in small ways for the BWIA industry and the WISP industry.

But, financially, for me, it simply didn't work out. So, it's time to accept that reality and move on, and  I'm now looking for full-time work as a System Administrator or similar role in the Seattle (Eastside) area.

I'll still continue to write, here, and perhaps some of my other blogs, but that will be sporadic. When/if the new IT career settles down a bit, I'll try to commit enough "butt-in-chair" time to finally write "the book" (now bookS...) about BWIA from my perspective that have been in gestation for the same decade that I've been writing articles, blogs, etc.

It wasn't that I wasn't writing about Clearwire - I was; quite a bit, in fact... just not here. I couldn't break the habit of including Clearwire coverage in my main blog - Broadband Wireless Internet Access (BWIA) / WiMAX News. There was also my protracted health issues in the latter half of 2007, which are fortunately behind me now.

Today I ported over all the stories and mentions of Clearwire (and Sprint Nextel, when relevant by association with Clearwire) from Broadband Wireless Internet Access (BWIA) / WiMAX News to postings here on Independent Clearwire Blog.

Update of Stroh Publications LLC BWIA Reference Sites

I've completed yet another update of the Stroh Publications LLC Reference sites (listed at left). When I migrated them to static pages, that removed any notification via RSS and FeedBlitz (email notification, fed from RSS).

I then decided to combine the functions of blog and static page for the best of both worlds. The primary information, continuously updated, is on a static page at the URL, and when I update that information, I create a terse blog post with the specific update, which ripples through to RSS and FeedBlitz.

We continuously strive to make the Stroh Publications LLC suite of sites as useful as possible to readers.

We now return you to some of the best independent coverage of the Broadband Wireless Internet Access industry.
